"In baptism a person through washing with natural water with the invocation of the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is freed from sin, reborn to new life, puts on Christ and is incorporated in the Church which is His Body" (CCEO, can 675.1).

Baptisms

Arrangements
Parents are encouraged to make arrangements for the baptism of their child through the Parish Priest as soon as possible. This will allow him time to prepare paperwork and provide you with guidance and any supporting literature. Scheduling in advance is helpful—at least one, possibly two, months ahead of time. Ideally, infants should be baptized between 3 and 9 months of age, but this is not a hard fast rule. Because of the liturgical cycles of the church year, baptisms may be prohibited during certain times of the year. Consult with the Parish Priest for more information.

Parents
Since Baptism and Chrismation are symbolic of the entrance into the life of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, parents are encouraged to be recipients of the sacraments and participants in the mysteries of our liturgies. This is an expression of the life, faith, and love of the Catholic Church.

Godparent/Sponsor
Although parents are responsible for selecting godparents/sponsors for their child, they should consult with the priest for guidance in selecting an appropriate sponsor. At least one of the sponsors should be a mature member (preferably actively practicing member) of the Catholic Church. After all, the godparents are expected to assist and guide the child to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church.

Adult Baptisms
On occasion, adults who wish to become a member of the Catholic Church may be baptized. In these cases, a period of adult catechism is required prior to receipt of the sacrament. Please consult with the Parish Priest for information and arrangements.

Emergency Baptisms
If an unbaptized child or person is in grave danger of dying through illness or injury, the priest can perform an emergency baptism in the home or hospital.

Clothing and Items Required for the Service
Infants should be dressed in a white baptismal gown or outfit which will allow the priest to easily access and anoint the baby's eyes, ears, back of the neck, chest, hands and feet. Avoid one piece outfits.

Additional items required for the baptismal service. 1) Small white linen cloth or blanket. 2) Cross for the infant.
